Videos

Here are two videos of baby Fintan. The first was taken when Fin was two days old and the second is of Fin 4 weeks and 2 days old. Just thought we'd share pics of Fin in motion.

These days, Fintan, Jeff, and I are really finding our rhythm. Jeff and I have been paying attention to and documenting Fin's natural sleeping/napping/awake/feeding times and have found that he is quite predictable. It really is a help for us to be able to somewhat anticipate his needs. His nights are very steady-goes to sleep around 9, wakes up at 1am for his first feeding, and then again at 4am and 7-7:30am. So, I'm getting some solid blocks of sleep and his night feedings are going pretty well-he wakes up, eats, falls back asleep usually within 30 minutes.

Last night we introduced Fin to his first bottle at his 8:45pm feeding. We wanted to wait until breastfeeding was well established before doing so. Jeff fed it to him and he opened his mouth slowly but then took it without any trouble at all. Jeff is stoked to get in on the feeding action-it's been tough on him not being able to console his little boy when he's crying from hunger.

Fin and I have been enjoying our days together. I realized this week that Fin and I had our first outing together without anyone else and it was a major success. Everyone in CVS complimented Fin on his chill demeanor. Again, figuring out his natural rhythm has been really helpful. He's up around 7:30am, awake for an hour or so, then sleeps for about 45mins-1hour. He then is ready to start his day and doesn't nap again until about 2 or 3ish-he's not much of a napper just like his Mama! Our days have been consisting of a morning walk with Diego (30-60mins) then running errands and Jeff usually comes home for lunch so we are sure to be home by then. Fin's ready for a nap after lunch and I usually sleep at the same time too. If I don't rest/sleep when he does during the afternoon, I really feel it around 8pm so I've been pretty diligent to lay down and not worry about laundry, dishes, etc (plus, Jeff is really good at keeping on those things).

Fin has been smiling much more these days-a couple times he was looking right at me and let out a huge grin-I melted. He's also becoming much more vocal-lots of "chatting and cooing" going on. He his stretching a lot and seems to be growing quite long quickly! His neck strength is also improving every day.

Keri comes to town for a whirlwind visit tomorrow. I'm so glad she has business in Atlanta every few months! Jeff and I can't wait for her to meet Finny Bear.

Lots o' Pics

Life is great. Fin is lovely and so adorable. Family left this morning-they were so helpful. Glad they could make it down to meet Finny Bear. I am sleepy. Going to rest now. Happy Monday!

Back on Track!

Fin got his act together last night and slept for four hour intervals! Yay! We are feeling much better today-thanks little buddy for letting us have better sleep!

Jeff had a great golf outing yesterday-said the course was really tough but played well. He works this morning and then this afternoon we're going to venture out into the city to show Grandma around (she wants to see Atlanta). Other than that we're taking it easy and will probably head to the aquarium tomorrow, we'll see.

Grandma and I making caramel rolls this morning-we ate all of them yesterday and Jason is coming to town.

Grandpa and his grandson-talking hockey and winter camping!

Auntie Haley and Fin-she's been such a huge help and he certainly loves snuggling with her!

Our Little Man is Confused!

Fintan has mixed up his days and nights! That leaves Ma and Pa quite sleepy today. Hopefully we can get him turned around soon-the 1 am wake-up call is a bit rough. He isn't cranky during the night, just WIDE AWAKE!

Also, Fin had his first real fussy day on Wednesday and has had increased fussiness since. What happened to our little angel?! Everything I read has said that around this time (3 weeks) fussiness increases until it peaks around 6 weeks. Hopefully that's the case and we're not facing colic.

He had a dr appt yesterday. Everything looks great, he's quite healthy. He weighs 10 lbs 11 oz and is 22.5 inches! He's in the 95th percentile for height and 15th for weight--long and skinny! Our pediatrician actually called him 'thin'! We laughed because he looks like a little chunker to us!

Having the family here has been really helpful. Grandma has been spending her time baking (yum!), Haley and Dee have been doing homework, feeding me (much appreciated), holding Fin and soothing him, walking the dogs, and cooking dinner, making snacks, etc. It's great having the extra hands and eyes around, so nice to get a solid nap in without having one ear listening for Fin.

Last night, Jeff was given the opportunity to go play East Lake Golf Course today. Knowing what a big deal it is, and considering I have family here, if there was a time to go, it's now! So he's super excited and will be teeing off at 1pm. I'm so happy for him that he gets to play this course!!

I'm off to nap now. Wish me luck on getting Fin days and nights on track!

Life + baby=good

Jeff, Fin, and I have been doing really well since I last posted. While Fin's stridor hasn't improved it's less and less disconcerting every day. Fin apparently didn't receive the memo that we could space feedings out to 3-4 hours and has actually increased the feedings to every 2 hours-no wonder he's growing so well!

Our neighbors have been amazingly supportive of us. Dropping in to see if we need anything, sending us food, loving on baby Fin...we truly are experiencing the precise definition of community. We are incredibly grateful.

We're having such a blast getting to know Fin and sharing him with our community. It is really exciting to see how he reacts to new situations and new people (mostly very positively). Fin is also the biggest cuddle muffin! He LOVES to be held and cuddled all day and night. Jeff and Fin have developed quite a special bond already. Fin melts into Jeff's body when Jeff is holding him and completely relaxes when he stares at Jeff's face. It's incredibly heart-warming to see. Fin and I are also bonding really well. It's happened a few times now that when he's fussing (for example, right after eating and someone else is holding him) we run through the list, diaper is clean, he's not tired, and not hungry, and then I hold him and he calms down...he just wanted his mom! Again, aahhh! Just makes me melt. We love him so much.

The dogs are still doing well. Fidel is having a tough time but we're being cognizant to give him all the loving we can, when we can. They both have warmed up to Fintan and give him sweet little kisses.

We're quite tired these days but are floating in a haze of blissful euphoria and aren't bothered by exhaustion.

We have more family coming in this week for a visit. Looking for to introducing to them to Baby Fintan and having extra hands around the house to help us out. Also, Jason flies in for a quick visit Saturday to Sunday...so excited he'll be able to meet his precious nephew.

Off to nap while the little guy is sleeping too. Love love to all!

Finally captured Fin's smile! He has a such a sweet smile and the most adorable dimple! This was taken after a serious milk session: full belly=happy baby.

Maiden Voyage

Went for a walk with Diego and Fin today. It was our first time out just the three of us and it went pretty well. Had to remind Diego of the rules a few times but overall it was a success! Can't wait for many more walks to come.

Also, Auntie Kelsey is here and is loving on her nephew. We're so lucky to have so many people who already love our son.

Grandma Dolly Says GoodbyeBye, Auntie Kelsey Says Hello...Hello, Hello!

Yesterday Grandma Dolly headed back north to Minnesota-she'll be back soon though to help out when Jeff goes out of town for a squash tournament. Auntie Kelsey is making her way down south from North Dakota today and will stay through Sunday. We look forward to harnessing her ample energy to help out around the casa!

Tuesday night was a rough one with Fin. He has really audible breathing, sounds like stridor, so with him sleeping in our room I was up all night making sure he was ok. Probably slept about 1.5 hours total and was a complete sleepy mess yesterday (example, put the laundry in but never turned it on).

Last night was our first night at home with Fin alone and it went incredibly well. We decided to move him into his crib for the night (that was tougher for me than I expected). He slept really well and so did mama. Ah, I feel normal once again, well, more rested at least. Hopefully this pattern keeps up.

Yesterday, despite the reassurances of my neighbor Elaine (a nurse-practitioner pediatrician), my mom (an OR nurse), my other neighbor Barbara (an ex-ED nurse) and everyone else, I brought Fin in to get his breathing checked out. Since Tuesday night was so rough, Jeff and I were both concerned about his breathing and just figured piece of mind was worth a trip to see the doc. As expected (and as told to me by everyone!) Fin is totally healthy-he's just figuring out how to breathe, has mucous in his throat, etc.

I am happy to report that he is 9lbs 11oz, has grown an inch (22 inches), and his head has grown an inch and a half (up to 15 now). Glad to see the little mister growing. The other good news is that our pediatrician (who is a U of MN med school grad from Esko, MN!) said that I can stretch the feedings out-instead of every 2-3 hours we can do 3-4 hours. More sleep for me! No one can believe he is only 2 weeks old-they all think he is so huge! Must take after his ma and pa...

We did end up buying a swing/bouncer combo. The swing is not such a hit with the little guy but the bouncer is raging success! He loves the vibration and calms right down and falls asleep when he's placed in it.

Fintan's Angel Face!

All is well in our household. Fin is eating well and I'm able to sleep a few hours a night. Jeff started back at work yesterday :(. We missed him but he was able to get home early for some time with his boy. Jeff has been great at taking the early morning shift with Fintan so I can get a couple more hours of sleep. My mom is treating me, amongst other things, to a postpartum massage today--can't wait! We're going to buy a baby swing today for times when I'm home alone and need to put Fintan somewhere while I change laundry, etc.

Bath Time!

Yesterday morning we went to a local farmer's market. It was a beautiful morning and Fin was great. Jeff has been talking about carrying his baby boy around in a baby carrier for quite some time so he was so stoked to finally do it!

Fin's umbilical cord fell off so we were finally able to give him a proper bath last night (opposed to sponge baths). My mom bought us a tummy tub which is all the rage in Europe and we now understand why. Fin LOVED bath time, never cried or even fussed, he was SUPER calm and relaxed. The tub essentially mimics the womb--nice and cozy and warm.

He is still eating and sleeping like crazy. We weighed him last night and he's a little less than 10 lbs! Go Fin Go! He is really good at visually tracking movement now-seems to have improved over night. We have lots of tummy time and his head control is getting much better.

Grandma Dolly is loving reading and cuddling the little mister all the time! It's definitely nice to have an extra pair of hands and eyes around! Fin's been loving it too.

This morning we had our usual Waffle Sunday but this time our son joined us. It was a beautiful morning and the whole pack was in attendance.

This Is My Dance Ya'll, Humpty Hump's My Name

We discovered today that Fintan really digs on Digital Underground's Humpty Dance-he smiled a ton during the song...too cute. Also, our neighbor Caroline came over and serenaded Fintan with an Italian aria. He also responded positively to her singing by turning his head towards her, never furrowing his brow, and slowly grooving to the music. So, he clearly likes a wide range of sound!

We heard him really cry for the first time today. Extremely hard to hear but was consoled easily! That little bottom lip protruding broke my little heart!

The cloth diapers are AMAZING! We planned on using disposables until his umbilical cord fell off but he is quite the heavy wetter so we were changing diapers about every hour and clothing too as he would leak all over himself. Two days ago we changed to cloth diapers and not one leak, everything well contained, and they're super easy to use! Hurray!!! We are so impressed by their efficacy that we actually toasted them at dinner tonight. Haha.

Gaining strength and weight-you can definitely tell that he is heavier when you pick him up. Yay!

He is still sleeping and eating well. As of now, I give him a bedtime feeding (my bedtime) around 10:30-11:00pm and then wake him up at 1:30am for a feeding/change and then again at 4:30. So over all I'm getting two hour chunks of sleep a few times a night and that seems to be sufficient.

Jeff and I have taken him on a few walks around the neighborhood in his stroller. It feels so funny to be out of the house together, our little family. Jeff and I have never stared at anything so much in our lives!

In non-baby news, I am so stoked for Monday Night Football and the return of Randy Moss!!!

Hope everyone is well! Love love love!!!

First Doctor Appt and Trip to Costco

Since returning home on Saturday life has been oh so good. The sleepless nights, multiple diaper changes, constant breastfeeding, and oohing and aahing over the little one, life has been busy but so fun! It's not as bad as I expected (the being up every few hours to feed, etc) but having my mom here has been a HUGE help. She's on top of the laundry, walks the dogs, cooks, changes multiple diapers, and after one of the night feedings she does the burping and changing so I can head back to bed. Jeff and I have said multiple times how nice it has been having her here.

The dogs are, well, they're adapting. Diego has sort of taken on a new roll of protector. He follows wherever the baby goes and keeps a watchful eye over him. He's even given out a few kisses to him (which are hard to come by)! Fidel...poor Fidel. He's terribly confused as to what I'm holding and why I'm not holding him. I've given in to letting him sleep with me at night so gets some one on one time but...ay...my poor little Fidel!

Fintan is an absolute rock star of a baby. He eats and sleeps so well and has such a sweet nature. When wakes up he doesn't cry, he just opens his eyes and looks around. He is also very interested in exploring his surroundings visually.

Yesterday Fin had his first doctor appt. When we were discharged from the hospital he weighed 7lbs15oz and yesterday he was already back up to 8lbs3oz! Woot woot! He passed all of his screenings and all the nurses and doctor commented at how much they love his name and on what a good baby he is.

After the appt, we went on our first outing to Costco (we bought an auxiliary freezer so we went stock up on frozen goods). Fintan did awesome (slept the entire time) and it was a good dry run to be out and about. I, on the other hand, faded quickly and became very sore /hungry. I'm still moving slowly but every day is a little better.

Will continue to post more pics when I'm not feeding the boy, sleeping, or eating! Thanks to everyone for your love and support. Jeff and I could not be any happier-this is way more fun than we ever could have imagined.

Quick Update

Fintan is doing spectacularly outside of the womb! He eats really well, is passing his newborn screens with flying colors, and the nurses all comment on what a good baby he is...Jeff and I are obviously so glad to hear that he is so healthy.

We stayed in the hospital last night because they wanted to be sure his spitting-up decreased, which it definitely did (just need to burp longer). We sent him to the nursery and then the nurses brought him back every 3 hours for feeding so Jeff and I could get some rest. Still feeling tired but the couple hours of uninterrupted sleep were needed. This morning we're getting ready to head home. Can't wait to see how the pups react! Our neighbors have been magnificent and taking care of Diego and Fidel-it's such a luxury to not be worrying about whether or not they're ok.

Fin is totally strong, lifts his head, and his legs, my goodness, so much strength! He is a blast.

Edit: I just read the blog aloud to Jeff and he said, "And tell everyone how much I love you." :) I feel it! We have a lovely little family.
